It was another busy day across the globe and here at home, with developments in international affairs, public health, local business, sports, and the weekend forecast.

Trump Calls for Stricter Voting Laws

President Donald Trump delivered a primetime address Thursday night, once again disputing the results of the 2020 presidential election while calling for stricter voting laws ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

During the speech, Trump promoted a voter ID proposal currently before Congress. The legislation has not advanced due to a lack of sufficient support.

Tensions Continue Between the U.S. and Iran

Fighting continues to escalate in the Middle East.

Iran launched new strikes targeting U.S. facilities in the region, including what reports describe as the first direct attack in Syria following six consecutive nights of U.S. strikes on Iranian military sites.

The ongoing conflict has significantly disrupted shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy shipping routes.

CDC Investigating Taco Bell Outbreak

Investigators with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have reportedly linked shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms to Taco Bell as a potential source of the ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak.

According to the Michigan Department of Health, more than 4,300 cases have now been reported statewide, with 102 people hospitalized.

Health officials continue to investigate the outbreak and encourage anyone experiencing symptoms after recent restaurant visits to contact their healthcare provider.

Bay County Plant Closing Impacts 140 Workers

Changing conditions in the electric vehicle industry are leading to layoffs in Mid-Michigan.

Semiconductor manufacturer SK Siltron announced it will close its Bay County facility, affecting all 140 employees at the site.

Most workers are expected to lose their jobs within the next 60 days.

The Detroit Tigers continue their road trip today against the Los Angeles Angels.

Closer to home, the Great Lakes Loons host the West Michigan Whitecaps tonight at Dow Diamond in Midland. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

An Air Quality Alert remains in effect as wildfire smoke from Canada continues to impact the region.

Today: Cloudy skies this morning will gradually give way to some sunshine this afternoon. Expect a hot high near 92 degrees, with smoky conditions continuing.

Tonight: Partly cloudy with widespread smoke and a warm overnight low around 73 degrees.

Saturday: Mostly cloudy with a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms, followed by gradual clearing later in the day. High near 90 degrees.

Sunday: Sunshine returns with lower humidity and a pleasant high around 83 degrees, making it the pick of the weekend for outdoor plans.
