Is Social Media Losing Its Social Side?

Remember when updating your status was basically a daily ritual?

You’d share what you were eating, where you were going, a funny thought, or just let everyone know you were “having a great day.” But these days, it seems like posting on social media has become less about fun and more like another chore on the to-do list.

A new survey from a privacy company found that 55% of Americans say maintaining their social media presence now feels more like work than entertainment.

More than half of people say they’re posting less than they were five years ago, and many are becoming much more selective about what they put online.

So why are people stepping back?

The biggest reasons include:

  •  Political arguments and online debates

  • Endless doomscrolling

  • Growing concerns about privacy

The survey also found younger adults are feeling the pressure the most, with Gen Z more likely than other generations to say social media has become exhausting.

Maybe the days of posting every meal, every vacation, and every random thought are fading away.

Perhaps the next big status update should simply say:

“Gone outside… be back, maybe never.”

National Mac & Cheese Day: The Search for the Perfect Bowl

It’s National Mac & Cheese Day, which means there’s no need to overthink dinner tonight. If you’ve got kids, this is an easy win. If you don’t have kids… even better. There’s absolutely no shame in making yourself a big bowl of cheesy comfort food. After all, who doesn’t love mac and cheese?

But if you’re someone who likes to take things to the next level, a series of social media surveys recently set out to answer one important question:

What makes the PERFECT macaroni and cheese?

Thousands of opinions came in, and the results reveal some pretty strong mac and cheese preferences.

 The Best Noodle Choice

When it comes to pasta shape, spirals were the clear winner, taking 55% of the vote.

Classic curved and bent tubes came in second with 22%, while shells grabbed 15%.

The lesson? People want noodles that know how to hold onto that cheesy goodness.

 The Ultimate Cheese

No surprise here: cheddar took the top spot, earning 40% of the vote.

The runner-up was a softer, smoother melting cheese category, including favorites like Monterey Jack, Havarti, Muenster, and Gouda, with 20%.

 The Perfect Seasonings

Plain cheese is great, but many people believe the right spices can take mac and cheese to another level.

The most popular additions included:

  • Pepper

  • Dry mustard

  • Paprika

  • Salt

  • Dijon mustard

  • Garlic powder

  • Onion powder

One surprise? Cayenne pepper didn’t make the list, even though a little heat can add a nice kick.

Some adventurous cooks suggested adding ingredients like chicken stock, Worcestershire sauce, curry, or even pesto.

 Should There Be Meat?

For most people, the answer was simple:

No meat. Keep it classic.

About two-thirds voted to keep their mac and cheese vegetarian.

For those who wanted to add something extra, pork ranked highest, likely thanks to the popularity of bacon. Chicken came in second.

 What About Vegetables?

Again, the majority said:

No vegetables needed.

But if you want to sneak something green into the bowl, broccoli was the most popular choice, followed by onions.

 The Perfect Cheese Sauce

When it comes to sauce consistency, people want balance.

The most popular answer was:

“Plenty, but not crazy.”

“Just a little extra” came in next, while a small group admitted they love their mac and cheese extremely dry, describing it as being “drier than the Sahara.”

A certain school cafeteria style may have been hiding in that 1%.

 The Dairy Debate

The favorite dairy addition was:

 Whole milk

Cream came in second, followed by evaporated milk.

 Oven or Stovetop?

This one was close, but the oven won the battle.

Oven-baked mac and cheese beat stovetop 58% to 42%.

The crispy top layer may have been the deciding factor.

So today, whether you’re making the perfect homemade version or grabbing a classic blue box from the pantry, enjoy National Mac & Cheese Day the right way:

With a fork in one hand and absolutely no regrets. ????

Mid-Michigan News Roundup: Iran Conflict Escalates, Michigan Health Alert, Blood Shortage, and Dangerous Heat

Here's a look at some of the top stories making headlines today across Michigan and around the world.

U.S. Launches Third Night of Strikes Against Iran

The conflict between the United States and Iran continues to intensify.

For a third consecutive night, the U.S. military carried out strikes across multiple locations in Iran. At the same time, Iran launched attacks targeting U.S. allies in the region.

President Donald Trump formally notified Congress that military operations have resumed, while U.S. Central Command announced it would reinstate a naval blockade of Iranian ports beginning at 4 p.m. today.

Officials continue to monitor the rapidly developing situation as tensions remain high throughout the Middle East.

Michigan Flags Lowered to Half-Staff

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags at the State Capitol Complex and on all public buildings throughout the state to be flown at half-staff in honor of Lindsey Graham, who passed away Saturday at the age of 71.

According to the Governor's Office, flags will remain at half-staff until 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 18.

Health Officials Investigating Cyclosporiasis Outbreak

Michigan health officials are continuing to investigate a growing outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a foodborne illness caused by a microscopic parasite.

Early findings suggest that lettuce or other leafy salad greens may be the source of the outbreak, although investigators have not identified a specific type of produce, grower, or supplier. Officials also say other food items have not been ruled out.

More than 2,600 cases have been reported in Michigan since June 22, making it one of the state's largest recent foodborne illness investigations.

Health officials encourage anyone experiencing prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, or fatigue to contact their healthcare provider.

American Red Cross Declares Emergency Blood Shortage

The American Red Cross is asking donors to roll up their sleeves after blood supplies dropped by 25 percent nationwide, including in Michigan.

The organization has declared its first summer emergency blood shortage since 2024 and says hospitals depend on a steady supply of donations to support surgeries, cancer treatments, trauma patients, and emergency care.

If you're eligible to donate, now is a great time to make an appointment and help replenish the blood supply.

Yellowstone Bison Charges Visitor, Sends Him Flying in Viral Video

A visit to Yellowstone National Park turned into a terrifying encounter when a massive bull bison charged a grandfather visiting with his grandson, sending him flying through the air in a viral video that has been making the rounds online.

The incident happened Friday at Yellowstone, where the grandfather and his grandson were visiting the park and taking in the incredible wildlife. Video captured by a nearby photographer shows the bison charging toward the man as he tries to get away by running around a group of trees.

Unfortunately, the bison caught up with him, hooked him with its horns, and tossed him into the air. The man flew several feet before hitting the ground hard.

Thankfully, he is expected to make a full recovery, although he suffered a broken leg and needed surgery.

Watch the viral video here: https://twitter.com/i/status/2076123348161995138

The Bison Was Not Provoked, Witness Says

While some wildlife encounters happen because visitors get too close or ignore safety warnings, this situation appears to be different.

Photographer Mike Macleod, who captured the incident, said the bison had wandered into a campsite and initially focused its attention on a group of young boys near a tent. The kids were reportedly taking photos from a distance of about 50 to 100 feet away.

The boys quickly scattered, but shortly afterward, the bison noticed the grandfather and his grandson. The pair had stopped to take photos of the animal from afar when the bison suddenly charged.

The grandson was able to run away, but the grandfather was chased down and thrown into the air.

Witnesses stepped in, helped move the bison away, created a safety perimeter, and called 911.

A Wild Landing Gets a Funny Review

Macleod rushed over to help and tried to lighten the moment by joking with the injured man.

As a former U.S. Army paratrooper, Macleod told him he would give his landing a “9.5 out of 10.”

The grandfather reportedly replied:

Well, if you just caught me five years ago, I coulda done better.

Despite the scary moment, the man’s sense of humor remained intact.

Yellowstone Reminder: Wildlife Is Still Wild

The National Park Service is investigating the incident, but early reports indicate this was not a case of visitors intentionally provoking the animal.

Park officials regularly remind visitors that even when you are following the rules, wild animals can be unpredictable. Bison may look calm while grazing, but they are powerful animals capable of moving quickly and reacting suddenly.

The National Park Service recommends staying at least 25 yards away from large animals like bison, elk, and deer, and 100 yards away from predators like bears and wolves.

A beautiful wildlife photo is worth remembering, but it is never worth becoming part of the wildlife story.

Where Does Michigan Rank for Quality of Life?

When people think about the "best" state to live in, it's usually about more than just beautiful scenery or low taxes. Things like healthcare, public safety, childcare, clean air, and overall quality of life can make a huge difference.

Every year, CNBC ranks America's Top States for Business. While Ohio took the top business ranking this year, CNBC also grades each state on quality of life, and the results are generating plenty of conversation.

How CNBC Measured Quality of Life

The rankings looked at several factors, including:

  • Crime rates
  • Air quality
  • Access to healthcare
  • Cost and availability of childcare
  • Worker protections
  • Inclusiveness of state laws
  • Reproductive rights

Each state received a score out of 290 possible points.

The Top 5 States for Quality of Life

 1. Vermont (233 points, A )
The Green Mountain State has now held the No. 1 spot for six straight years.

 2. Maine (232 points, A )

 3. New Jersey (223 points, A )

4. Minnesota (210 points, A)

5. Connecticut (205 points, A)

One thing these states have in common? They're all in the northern part of the country.

The Bottom 5 States

At the other end of the rankings:

50. Tennessee (64 points, F)

49. Texas (78 points, F)

48. Indiana (82 points, F)

47. Louisiana (82 points, F)

46. Georgia (89 points, F)

According to CNBC, lower scores were driven by factors such as crime, worker protections, and other quality-of-life measures included in the study.

So... Where Does Michigan Rank?

Michigan didn't crack either the top five or the bottom five, landing somewhere in the middle of the pack overall.

The Great Lakes State has plenty going for it:

  • More than 11,000 inland lakes and four Great Lakes shorelines
  • Four distinct seasons
  • Affordable housing compared to many coastal states
  • World-class outdoor recreation, from camping and fishing to skiing
  • Vibrant communities like Frankenmuth, Traverse City, Grand Rapids, Midland, Bay City, Saginaw, and the Detroit metro area

Like every state, Michigan also faces challenges, including road infrastructure, housing affordability in some areas, and access to healthcare in certain rural communities.

What Do You Think?

Statistics only tell part of the story. The people who live here know what makes Michigan special.

Whether it's spending weekends Up North, catching a Tigers game, relaxing on a Great Lakes beach, or enjoying a summer festival in Mid-Michigan, there's a lot to love about calling the Mitten State home.

Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce's Wedding Came With a Jaw-Dropping Price Tag

When you're one of the biggest pop stars in the world marrying one of the NFL's biggest names, it's safe to say the wedding isn't going to be cheap.

But just how expensive was it?

According to The Knot Worldwide, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's lavish celebration reportedly carried an estimated price tag of $20 million to $30 million.

That's enough to make even the fanciest wedding planner do a double take.

Turning Madison Square Garden Into a Wedding Venue

One of the biggest expenses?

Transforming the iconic Madison Square Garden into a wedding venue.

The estimated cost to rent the arena, along with several days for setup, teardown, and the massive infrastructure needed to pull it all off, reportedly landed between $5 million and $10 million.

That's before the first guest even walked through the doors.

Flowers... Lots and Lots of Flowers

If you've ever priced wedding flowers, you know they aren't cheap.

Now imagine decorating one of the world's most famous arenas.

The Knot estimates another $5 million or more went toward floral arrangements, custom décor, elegant draping, carpeting, and transforming the venue into a one-of-a-kind wedding experience.

Feeding More Than a Thousand Guests

The guest list reportedly included around 1,100 people, and keeping everyone fed wasn't exactly inexpensive.

Catering, staffing, transportation, and event logistics are estimated to have cost between $2.5 million and $3 million.

That's a lot of champagne to pour.

Jason Kelce Stole the Show... Again

Of course, no Kelce family celebration would be complete without Jason Kelce making headlines.

Jason recently described the wedding as "great" and "a good time."

He also joked that he enjoyed well over 15 beers during the celebration.

Honestly... that may be the least surprising wedding statistic of them all.

The 3 Germiest Things You Touch Every Day... And Probably Forget to Wash Your Hands After

We all know we're supposed to wash our hands after using the bathroom. But what about the things we touch every day without giving them a second thought?

According to health experts, there are three everyday items that are absolutely loaded with germs, and washing your hands after using them can help reduce your chances of getting sick.

You might be surprised by what's on the list...

1. Touchscreens and Pin Pads

Think about how many fingers touch these every single day.

Whether you're:

  • Using the ATM
  • Ordering food on a restaurant tablet
  • Checking out at the grocery store
  • Typing your phone number into a keypad
  • Using a self-checkout screen

...you're touching a surface that hundreds, maybe even thousands, of other people have touched before you.

Those germs can linger, making these high-traffic screens a hotspot for bacteria and viruses.

 2. Grocery Cart Handles

When was the last time you thought about cleaning a shopping cart handle?

Probably never.

But consider what those handles have been through.

People push them after handling raw meat packages, caring for sick kids, coughing into their hands, or simply skipping a trip to the sink.

That's why many grocery stores now offer disinfectant wipes at the entrance. They're worth using!

3. Your Cell Phone

This one might be the biggest surprise... even though it's probably the dirtiest thing you own.

Your phone goes everywhere with you:

  • The kitchen
  • The gym
  • Your car
  • Restaurants
  • Public places
  • Even the bathroom

Yet most people rarely clean it.

Every time you touch your phone after touching another surface, you're transferring germs right back onto something you hold against your face and use dozens, if not hundreds, of times each day.

A quick wipe with an electronics-safe disinfecting cloth can make a big difference.

 The Bottom Line

Good handwashing is still one of the easiest and most effective ways to stay healthy.

So the next time you:
 Use an ATM

Grab a shopping cart

Spend all day on your phone

...take an extra minute to wash your hands and, while you're at it, give that phone a good cleaning too.

Hold Up, New York Times... Detroit Coney Dogs Were Robbed!

There are food rankings... and then there are rankings that make Michiganders spit out their lunch.

The latest hot dog showdown from The New York Times has crowned the Seattle Dog as the Best Regional Hot Dog in America.

Really?

If you've never had one, a Seattle Dog is topped with cream cheese, grilled onions, mustard, and sometimes jalapeños.

Celebrity chef José Andrés, one of the judges, even called the cream cheese the "diplomat" because it brings all the flavors together.

That's nice.

But let's address the elephant... or should we say Coney Dog... in the room.

Detroit Didn't Just Lose... Michigan Lost Its Mind

According to the taste test, the Seattle Dog beat out some legendary competitors, including the:

 Chicago Dog

 New York Dog

Cincinnati-style Dog

Arizona Sonoran Dog

Kansas City Dog

West Virginia Dog

...and yes...

 Detroit's legendary Coney Dog.

Excuse us?!

Here in Michigan, the Coney Dog isn't just food... it's practically a personality trait.

A perfectly steamed bun.

An all-beef hot dog.

That famous meaty Coney sauce.

A stripe of mustard.

A pile of diced onions.

Simple. Classic. Perfect.

No cream cheese required.

 And While We're At It...

Can we also give some love to the Flint-style Coney Dog?

Detroit and Flint have been "arguing" for decades over whose Coney reigns supreme.

Detroit fans swear by the rich, saucy chili topping.

Flint loyalists will tell you the dry beef heart Coney sauce is the only authentic way to do it.

The truth?

Michigan is lucky enough to have TWO iconic Coney Dogs.

Seattle has one.

We've got an entire rivalry.

So... Cream Cheese?

Does cream cheese belong on a hot dog?

Maybe.

Will we try one someday?

Sure.

Will it ever replace a Detroit or Flint Coney?

Not a chance.

Around here, the real debate isn't Seattle versus Chicago or New York.

It's Detroit or Flint?

Now that's an argument worth having.

Are You Missing These Spots When You Put On Sunscreen?

You probably slather on sunscreen before heading to the beach, the pool, or even mowing the lawn. But here's the question...

Are you actually covering everything?

A recent study suggests the answer is... probably not.

Researchers asked people to apply sunscreen to their faces, then used a special UV camera to reveal the areas they missed. Since the face is one of the most common places for skin cancer to develop, the results were eye-opening.

The average person missed about 10% of their face.

The Two Spots Almost Everyone Forgets

1. The Bridge of Your Nose

This was the biggest offender by far.

A whopping 77% of participants missed the bridge of their nose, and many also forgot the sides of it. Considering it's one of the first places the sun hits, that's a pretty important spot to remember.

2. Your Eyelids

About 14% of people skipped their eyelids, likely because nobody wants sunscreen dripping into their eyes.

But here's why it matters: 5% to 10% of all skin cancers occur on the eyelids, making them one of the most important places to protect.

Other Easy-to-Miss Spots

Your face isn't the only place that gets overlooked. According to the study, people also commonly forget to apply sunscreen to:

Your ears

Your scalp (especially if you have thinning hair or a part)

 The tops of your toes

 The backs of your knees

 Your armpits

They're all places that can get plenty of sun, especially during outdoor activities.

 The Bottom Line

Before you head outside this summer, take an extra few seconds to double-check your sunscreen routine.

Your nose, eyelids, ears, scalp, toes, knees, and even your armpits will thank you later.

Bay City Woman Charged After Loaded Gun Found at Fireworks Festival

A 19-year-old Bay City woman is facing multiple charges after police say she attempted to bring a loaded handgun into the Bay City Fireworks Festival Saturday night.

According to the Bay City Department of Public Safety, a security guard near Veterans Memorial Park witnessed the woman throw a backpack over a security fence. When the backpack was inspected, a loaded firearm was discovered inside.

She has been charged with one count of carrying a concealed weapon and two counts of assaulting, resisting, or obstructing police.

Cyclospora Cases Continue to Rise Across Michigan

Health officials say the number of Cyclospora infections reported across Michigan has climbed to approximately 700 cases.

Locally, six cases have been confirmed in Saginaw County and one in Midland County.

At this time, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has not identified a specific grower, supplier, or type of produce linked to the outbreak.

Because the source remains unknown, health officials recommend thoroughly washing all fresh fruits and vegetables under running water before eating them.

The Movies We’re Passing Down: The Classics Every Young Person Needs to See

At some point in life, you unlock a very important privilege: becoming the person who says, “Wait… you’ve NEVER seen that movie?!”

It’s basically the movie version of handing down family recipes, old stories, and the mysterious ability to know exactly where the remote is hiding.

Now, the editors at Cosmopolitan have put together a list of 50 “old” movies that every young person needs to watch. Of course, like any movie list, it’s also a little bit of “these are the movies WE love,” but there are plenty of legendary films that deserve a spot on the list.

Some of the classics they say younger generations should experience include:

 The Breakfast Club
Heathers
My Girl
Thelma & Louise
 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
 A Nightmare on Elm Street
 Big
 Pretty in Pink
 Dead Poets Society
 Who Framed Roger Rabbit
 The Shawshank Redemption
 Misery
 The Sandlot

And then there’s… Showgirls.

Yes, that one made the list too. A choice that will probably cause a few movie fans to pause, rewind, and ask, “Are we sure about this one?”

Pringles Is Putting Hot Dog Buns in Cans… And Somehow This Is Real

People love celebrating Christmas in July, but this might be the most unexpected “April Fools’ Day in July” moment yet. The wild part? It’s not a joke.

Pringles has announced a brand-new creation that sounds like it escaped from a snack scientist’s imagination: flavored hot dog buns that come in cans.

Yes, you read that correctly. Hot dog buns. In cans. One bun per can.

The limited-edition creation is called Pringles Pop Dog Buns, and these potato-based buns are infused with the flavors of some of Pringles’ most popular chips. The lineup includes:

Sour Cream & Onion
BBQ
Honey Mustard

Because apparently, regular hot dog buns were just too predictable. Somewhere, a hot dog looked at a potato chip and said, “I need that as a jacket.”

The buns won’t be showing up on grocery store shelves. They’re only available through Pringles’ online marketplace, Once You Pop Market.

Here’s how it works: You purchase a three-pack of Pringles chips for $7, and you’ll receive three Pop Dog Buns for free.

There will be two chances to get your hands on these canned creations:               The first drop happens tomorrow
The second drop happens Wednesday, July 15, which just happens to be National Hot Dog Day

Will America embrace the chip-flavored bun revolution? Or will people stare at a canned hot dog bun and ask, “Who looked at bread and said, ‘Put it in a can’?”

Either way, Pringles has officially made the summer of 2026 a little crunchier.
